Retina Australia Fundraiser
Retina Australia is keen to compile a data base with the DNA characteristics of Indigenous people with Retinitis Pigmentosa which is a group of genetic eye conditions leading to blindness, sometimes at birth or early in life. There are cures already developed and more coming and sufferers need to be identified so they can be alerted when a treatment is at hand. This is an art event aiming to raise funds for the establishment of the data base of Aboriginal people so they too can receive a cure. Fantastic exhibition of ethically sourced art from Communities all over Australia, food, wine and artwork raffles with Tali Gallery also donating proceeds from Indigenous art sales - please come along and support this very important cause.

ANU Rural Medial Society Close the Gap Day
The ANU Rural Medical Society (ARMS) held its inaugural “Canberra Pledges to Close the Gap” ceremony on Saturday 5 March, 2011. This event was successful on a number of levels: first, in commemorating the third anniversary of then-Prime Minister of Australia Kevin Rudd’s historic Apology to Indigenous Australians which took place on Wednesday 13 February, 2008; second, in educating health students from around East and Southeast NSW and the Canberra community about the significant gap in health between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians; and third, in reaffirming the commitment of health students and professionals to work to close this gap by improving Indigenous health. Following on the success of this event, and the success of similar events by other Rural Health Clubs in 2011, ARMS would like to hold this event again in 2012. We believe that hosting a ceremony organised by health students to reaffirm the Australian Government’s commitment to close the life-expectancy gap will be highly potent, and will send a strong message to the community regarding the commitment of the health workforce to achieving this very important goal. We plan to hold the ceremony on Saturday 28 April 2012, to coincide with the ARMS annual bush dance. We would like the initial part of the day to be planned in conjunction with OXFAM Close the Gap initiative and will be held from the morning to around midday. We will set up a booth outside the Canberra Centre, in the central business district of Canberra (Civic), with the aim of educating as many people as possible regarding the issues facing Indigenous Australians. Members of the public will be invited to sign up with OXFAM in a pledge to “Close the Gap”. ARMS will prepare a Media Release in order to obtain media coverage through local news agencies, helping to generate publicity for the cause and spreading the message to an even wider public. ARMS will invite all interested Rural Health Clubs (RHC), particularly the Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong and Riverina clubs to attend, thus helping to spread the message of a united, young and passionate medical and allied health workforce committed to advancing Indigenous health outcomes. Following the public “Close the Gap” pledge, members of RHCs are invited to the academic component of the event. This is to be preceded by a BBQ lunch and Welcome to Country ceremony, performed by a local Indigenous dance group. ARMS have previously used this group to help celebrate our Northern Territory Photo Exhibition. The event itself is to comprise a number of speakers from a multitude of different areas speaking on issues of Indigenous health and Indigenous culture. The intent is to have around five speakers, ideally a mixture of prominent community, health, academic and Indigenous leaders, addressing issues related to Indigenous health and strategies to improve the situation. Following the speeches, we will house a round-table discussion chaired by ARMS and involving the audience and speakers, regarding issues that concern medical and allied health students. We envisage that this event will last less than two hours in total.
