Tell Nike to JUST STOP IT

Phillip H. Knight

Chairman of Nike Inc.

Dear Mr Knight,

While Nike spends millions of dollars sponsoring individual athletes, poverty dominates the lives of the women and men who actually make Nike products in Asia. Their full-time wages are as low as US$2 a day, forcing many either into debt to meet their children's basic needs, or else to send them to distant villages to be looked after by relatives. Meanwhile, Nike is moving more and more production to countries where it is illegal to form independent unions.

Nike allows some independent factory monitoring. But much more is needed. We call on you to:

1. Ensure workers' full-time wages are a 'living wage' – at least enough to meet their basic needs and those of their children

2. Ensure workers are free to organise unions and bargain collectively

3. Ensure workers are able to complain to an independent monitor if serious abuses of their rights occur
