I write to ask you to ensure that workers who makes Puma's sport shoes and other products are paid at least a living wage-that is, enough for a family to meet its basic needs such as food, shelter, transport, health care and an amount for discretionary spending. I really appreciate Puma's honesty about ongoing labour problems in the production of the company's goods. As you know, Puma's fifth sustainability report, released in August 2009, recognised that "even today, issues of non-compliance can still be found at our factories. The most persistent issues are excessive overtime and recurrent work on rest days." The report found that "very few" of your supply factories provide annual leave, sick leave and maternity leave, as required by law, while some suppliers have been falsifying staff records. I welcome the report's assurance that Puma is working with its suppliers to improve conditions and ensure minimum wages are paid. The problem is that in most countries where Puma's goods are made, the legal minimum wage is nowhere near enough to meet a family's basic needs. Puma should commit to ensuring a living wage for workers. I disagree with your report when it says this "must be done at industry level and cannot be done by Puma alone." Puma should make sure the people who make your goods are paid at least a living wage, no matter what other brands choose to do. It is the right and decent thing to do. Plus there is a business argument for doing so. Any sportswear brand with the courage to break away from the pack and ensure workers are paid decent wages would enjoy a significant market advantage. I write to assure to you that there is a market for sports shoes and sportswear made under decent conditions. I would buy them.
