Add your voice – Australians are ready for real leadership on climate change

By Cara Bevington

While the results of last weekend’s federal election still remain up in the air, the message from the Australian public is clear – people want action on climate change and they will support the leaders who make it happen.

Long-term trends, recent polling and the unprecedented Greens and independents share of the national vote all confirm the strong public appetite for action on climate change and investment in a cleaner, healthier future for us, for poor communities in developing nations, and for future generations.

In the weeks leading up to the election, more than 4,000 people completed our climate survey voting for the top three climate actions they wanted to see an incoming government implement. See the results or add your vote below.

No matter who ends up holding the reins of the new government, or who the key players are, we want to welcome them with a clear message – the people of Australia are ready, we are ready for real leadership on climate change both at home and abroad.

As we hang in limbo land, we want your votes and comments to keep coming in. If you haven’t yet voted for your top three actions, add your voice below. Think we’re missing something off the list? Leave us a comment.

Vote now.

What 3 things would you like the major political parties to have in their climate change policies?

We all need to play our part in reducing our impact on the environment. We only have one world, all the money in the world will not help any living being if we are affected by irreversible climate change. The world has so much to lose. The sooner big corporations and governments realize that mass profits at the expense of the environment is a future disaster, the more we can help prevent this from happening. Profits are only fleeting, and often only shared by the owners or people profiting from these companies, which is few and far between compared to the billions of people living and sharing this planet. Why should the whole world allow a few people to destroy something that sustains us all!!! It is criminal!! There is no price you can ever pay for this world we live in and the life it brings every living being.

The people made it quite clear in the 2007 election that climate change is a major concern to all of us. Give us a break & do something before it’s too late. It will be immaterial which party is in power when climate change is uncontrollable. Please give voters credit for a little intelligence & stop pandering to the lowest common denominator!

We made our concerns quite clear in the 2007 election about climate change. This is a major concern to most people. Give us some credit for intelligence, stop pandering to the lowest common denominator, & please stop playing politics & power games. Do something positive before it’s too late.

MAPW’s booklet ‘Vision 2030′, response to Aus. Fed Gov. 2009 defence white paper, should be spread & read widely. we should NOT be spending $72+ billion a DAY on ‘defence’, The military produces greenhouse gases in their set up, their destruction of people & facilities, & the repair/rebuilding of same. Advance Australia WHERE?

  • Chris Skinner says:

Climate change must be addressed for the Mental Health of all Australians
