our approach
Oxfam Australia has worked to advance First Peoples’ rights for more than 40 years — and our work is not nearly done. We still have a long way to go towards First Peoples’ justice and equality in Australia.
The First Peoples Program is committed to working in partnership and solidarity with First Peoples communities to support their visions for the future. Across the five years of our new strategy, we will remain focused on supporting efforts that address the root causes of injustice, and on amplifying the leadership of First Peoples communities towards justice.
The program’s vision within the 2025-2030 strategy (Walking Together: Footsteps towards First Peoples Justice) is to support efforts advancing First Peoples justice across Australia.

A SNAPSHOT OF OUR PAST WORK
The First Peoples Program undertakes strategic initiatives to help build Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s capacity, political participation, community action, and health and wellbeing to challenge injustice.
Frequently asked questions
In this section, the First Peoples refers to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Despite 65,000 years caring for People and Country, today the First Peoples of Australia are too often excluded from the resources of their own country. By calling for First Peoples justice, our aim is to undo systemic inequality, challenge injustice, and achieve the change the First Peoples of Australia want to see.
Oxfam Australia has a strong, 47-year history working as an ally with First Nations communities — supporting health services, campaigns, political empowerment and more — and we’re incredibly proud of the achievements of our First Peoples team.

Other areas of work

The climate crisis brings enormous injustice. It is affecting us all, but not equally. In fact, the people who have contributed least to the changing climate are being affected by it the most, and are likely to be less able to protect themselves from the impacts.
Oxfam is seeking climate justice by making sure the people who are most impacted have a strong voice to influence policies and challenge polluters. We are also holding the biggest carbon emitters to account, advocating that they put resources back into communities to help them prepare and respond to climate impacts.
