Dear Mr Parker,

While Nike spends millions of dollars sponsoring individual athletes, poverty dominates the lives of the women and men who actually make Nikes in Asia. Their full-time wages are as low as US $2 a day, forcing many to either go into debt to meet their children's basic needs, or else send them to distant villages to be looked after by relatives. Meanwhile, Nike is moving more production to countries where you can be harrassed, beaten or even jailed for trying to form a union.

Nike has taken a small step forward by allowing some independent factory monitoring. But much more is needed. I call on you to:

  • Ensure full-time wages are at least adequate to meet the basic needs of workers and their children.
  • Ensure workers are free to organise unions and bargain collectively.
  • Ensure workers are able to complain to an independent monitor if serious abuses of their rights occur.

I look forward to hearing that you have addressed these concerns.

Yours sincerely,
