Bringing hope to people living with HIV in Malawi

Oxfam Australia is helping poor people in Malawi's rural highlands to develop sustainable livelihoods and prepare for the future. Most importantly, we're supporting home based carers – like Esther Peter from Malenga vilage to bring hope to people living with HIV in their communities.

Helping give the people of Laos a fresh start in life

Since 2001, we have been working with the people of the remote village of Phoupieng to provide clean water and irrigation systems. This work is typical of what is being done in more than 40 villages in three Laos provinces. Working directly with communities we provide people with resources and training to improve their living conditions.Women no longer have to walk to the river to get water and diseases like diarrhoea, cholera and skin rashes have all decreased.

Learning to build a future

Teacher Neang Chhun explains the latest reading assignment to adult literacy students. Villagers from Pakle, Cambodia, are full of the delights of learning since Oxfam Australia helped them to construct a new school with houses for teachers, a latrine block and a solar panel to provide electricity. Since the school opened, 231 children have been attending every day (almost half of them girls) and around 25 adults come at night to learn how to read and write. In fact, the school has become so popular that villagers are already thinking about the future - and building another one.
