Six years since the Tampa crisis of the 2001 federal election, urgent reform of Australia's asylum seeker policies is called for after a new report published 27 August found that the Pacific Solution had so far squandered $1 billion of taxpayers' money, exacerbated mental illness of refugees and was operating without scrutiny. » Download article [PDF 290KB]

Oxfam International and the NGO Coordination Committee of Iraq, "Rising to the humanitarian challenge in Iraq". Briefing Paper 105, 30 July 2007.
Armed violence is the greatest threat facing Iraqis, but the population is also experiencing another kind of crisis of an alarming scale and severity. Eight million people are in urgent need of emergency aid; that figure includes over two million who are displaced within the country, and more than two million refugees. Many more are living in poverty, without basic services, and increasingly threatened by disease and malnutrition. Despite the constraints imposed by violence, the government of Iraq, the United Nations, and international donors can do more to deliver humanitarian assistance to reduce unnecessary suffering. If people’s basic needs are left unattended, this will only serve to further destabilise the country. » Download article [PDF 320KB]

Oxfam Australia's submission to the inquiry into the provisions of the Migration Amendment (Designated Unauthorised Arrivals) Bill 2006, 22 May 2006.
The Australian Government proposed changes to refugee policy in 2006 to allow for all asylum seekers arriving by boat to be processed offshore. The Australian Government Senate Legal and Constitutional Committee called for submissions from the Australian community regarding the proposed changes – this is our submission.
Due to the broad-based opposition to this policy from the Australian community, members of the government opposed the legislation leading the government to withdraw the bill. The rejection of this bill is a good example of how the Australian community can have a positive impact on Australian legislative processes. » Download article [PDF 70KB]
