Past walks

Townsville, 2009

On Sunday 5 April 2009 a group of dedicated walkers headed off from The Rockpool on the Strand for the 5km Walk against Want. Participants were rewarded at the end of the day with a delicious free barbecue. Each walker was asked to donate $10 or more help create a just world without poverty. Many thanks to the Townsville Group for putting on yet another successful Walk against Want.

Brisbane city, 2007

The Brisbane Walk against Want was held in the beautiful, sunny surrounds of the South Bank Cultural Forecourt on 7 October 2007. Around 300 walkers participated in 5km and 10km options and walked/ran/uni-cycled by the river and through the City Botanic Gardens. The highlight was setting off along South Bank led by the Brazilian drum rhythms of the Brisbane Samba School, as well as the bands which entertained walkers during the event. Congratulations to Jessie Wells and the Queensland State Committee for putting on such a fantastic walk.

Brisbane city Dance against Want, 2009

The weekend before the Brisbane City Walk against Want, Rachael Jacobs held a Dance against Want at the Jagera Arts Centre. The Bollywood and Funk classes were extremely enjoyable and Rachael is looking forward to it putting them on again in 2010.

Redcliffe, Brisbane, 2007

The Redcliffe walk took place on Saturday 16 June 2007. The 5km walk set off around midday from Redcliffe Anzac Park, on the famous Redcliffe seaside, and proceeded down the coast to bustling Suttons Beach. Upon returning to Anzac Park the walkers were treated to a sausage sizzle and some information on Oxfam’s Close the Gap campaign which addresses Indigenous health inequalities. Congratulations to the Redcliffe Group for organising this event.

Cairns, 2007

You can never tell what the weather will do in tropical Queensland. Despite the rainy weekend (note: this year’s walk was moved to the “Dry Season”) more than 100 people turned out for the Cairns walk on Sunday 17 June 2007. The crowd strolled along the 5km return trip from the Lagoon, north to the Endeavour Fun Ship and back, taking in the scenic coastline and beautiful rainforest surrounds with the company of the teeming bird life. Congratulations go to event organisers Graeme and Edith for a successful day.
