Past walks
Warrnambool, 2009
MORE than 40 walkers hiked along the Merri River near Woodford on Sunday 22 March 2009 in aid of Oxfam Australia. Oxfam’s Warrnambool group has been trekking around Warrnambool for more than 41 years as part of Walk Against Want. Many thanks to Faye Armstrong and her fabulous walk team for yet another successful event.
Eastern Suburbs, Melbourne, 2009
The 2009 Eastern Suburbs Walk Against Want was held on Sunday 3 May 2009. It was a beautiful day, with 214 walkers and cyclists teaming with up to 80 volunteers and 3 groups of volunteer musicians, happily working together against poverty.
The walk was supported by many local businesses and individuals, donating goods, money, expertise and time - a real eastern suburbs community effort, enabling the group to thank participants with a free bbq, refreshments and entertainment. The event raised more than $21,000 - a fantastic effort!
Thank you to the Knox, Heathmont and Blackburn groups for their continuous support of the Eastern Suburbs Walk Against Want. Special thanks should also go to Barbara Hopkins for her invaluable efforts in reconciling the sponsorship books and helping to organise the walk.
Bayside Melbourne, 2009
There were three separate walks taking place at this year’s Bayside Walk Against Want on Sunday 3 May. Participants turned up for the 5km, 9km and 16km courses all passing along the foreshore areas and taking in breathtaking views of the bay. Those on the two shorter walks explored the historic Gypsy Village, while those extra enthusiastic participants taking the longer course ventured down the original tramway track between Sandringham Station and Beaumaris.
Many thanks to Bill & Jan Jelleff and the Bayside Group for running another fun and successful walk.
Williamstown, Melbourne 2009
A beautiful still Autumn morning greeted Williamstown walkers on Sunday 3 May 2009 as they began their walk from the Surf Living Saving Clubhouse. Participants were given the option to either head east or west for their return trip. Those heading west wound their way past the boat harbour, mangroves, bird hides and lakes. Those heading east chose to take in the historical and cultural perspective of the Williamstown foreshore, passing the Time Ball Tower and piers to Nelson Place.
After the walk, participants enjoyed a pleasant morning sitting on the Surf Club lawn and soaking up the sunshine. Beach side activities and refreshments added finishing touches to a successful morning.
Donations were generous from the walkers and their supporters, with one family of long-time supporters donating $1,000. Oxfam would like to thank the organisers and participants of the walk - your support is truly appreciated.
Castlemaine, 2009
Castlemaine's Walk Against Want highlighted the plight of people living in poverty around the world on Sunday 17 May 2009.
An estimated 60 people walked around Lake Joanna in the Botanic Gardens to raise funds for Oxfam’s work. It was a great day and afterwards the walkers were treated to pots of homemade vegetable soup and delicious bread from the Red Beard Bakery at Trentham. Many thanks to Judy Tregear and the Castlemaine walk team for their invaluable support.
