Raising chickens makes a good living for Beatrice Chikotsi in Zimbabwe. As a member of the Gweru Women's AIDS Prevention Association (GWAPA), Beatrice is one of many strong women working on poultry farms, which we support, to earn money for herself and her family.
Working with chooks means that she doesn't have to resort to sex work, which often happens for women without a husband, and fewer sex workers helps reduce the spread of HIV and AIDS. Poultry farms not only provide women with an income, but they give back to local communities in many ways.
The chickens make enough extra money for GWAPA to fund community HIV and AIDS outreach programs and to help provide care and support to children left orphaned by the virus. Impressive feats for a few little chooks.
