The right to life and security

Violence against women is a global problem that takes place in both the public and private spheres, and cuts across divisions of income, class and culture. It occurs in all societies to a greater or lesser degree and includes violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm. Violence is a key factor preventing women from exercising their rights and achieving social and economic equality.

Along with truth, human rights are among the first casualties of war: rights like freedom of movement, political expression, health, education, food and shelter. The way in which people's rights are violated can depend on their gender: women in conflict situations experience specific forms of violence, including rape and sexual harassment. In working to support people's human rights, it is essential to specifically address women's human rights issues, which can sometimes get lost in the broader struggle.

Oxfam Australia and the Oxfam International network are involved in often joint responses to humanitarian needs arising from conflicts and other disasters. These emergency programs in the field are increasingly accompanied by advocacy at regional and international levels. Our work in disaster management shows that even in emergency situations, working directly with women maximises impact.
