Indigenous health professionals are becoming increasingly concerned about the lack of young Indigenous leaders coming up through the ranks of the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services.
These primary health care services are initiated and operated by the local Aboriginal community to deliver culturally appropriate health care; more than 130 are operated by Aboriginal communities across Australia.
But with a lack of new young leaders coming up the ranks, these services are facing an uncertain future with a vacuum of knowledge, experience and advocacy skills among Indigenous health workers and administrators.
To help address this problem, Oxfam Australia supported the Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance of the Northern Territory (AMSANT) leadership workshop in Alice Springs on 5 October 2006. 40 young, emerging Indigenous leaders took part in the workshop which focused on strengthening their leadership skills.
