The Kakadu camp

The second Indigenous youth leadership workshop

Indigenous health professionals are becoming increasingly concerned about the lack of young Indigenous leaders coming up through the ranks of the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services.

These primary healthcare services are initiated and operated by the local Aboriginal community to deliver culturally appropriate healthcare; more than 130 are operated by Aboriginal communities across Australia.

But with a lack of new young leaders coming up the ranks, these services are facing an uncertain future with a vacuum of knowledge, experience and advocacy skills among Indigenous health workers and administrators.

To help address this problem, Oxfam Australia supported the Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance of the Northern Territory to hold the second leadership workshop in Kakadu from 4–8 June 2007. 40 young, emerging Indigenous leaders took part in the workshop which focused on strengthening their leadership skills.
