Leading the way

Josh Creamer is a 22-year-old Indigenous Australian who took part in the Oxfam International Youth Partnerships last year, an experience which has fuelled his determination to affect positive change for Indigenous Australian communities.

I grew up in regional Queensland. Growing up I saw that Indigenous Australians were being oppressed by government and other institutions. Discrimination was an everyday occurrence for me and I hated how it made me feel as if I was second class, not as good as everyone else and that I had to be ashamed because I was Aboriginal.

"I can empower myself and by doing that I can empower others and make a real difference."

I come to a point in my life where I thought I’m a person who can make a difference, I’m intelligent and motivated. It doesn’t have to be like this for our people. I can empower myself and by doing that I can empower others and make a real difference. I believe that I can make a difference in Indigenous people’s lives and am committed to change. I’m working hard to do this and along the way I’m trying to gain as much experience as I can. Experiences such as the International Youth Partnerships have only instilled in me greater confidence to achieve my objective.
