Celebrity chef Simon Bryant, from the ABC’s “The Cook and the Chef‟, will join Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood in the kitchen this week to help launch this year’s Fair Trade Fortnight.
At the launch this coming Saturday at the Adelaide Central Markets, the pair will make a batch of Simon’s chocolate muffins with dried cherries using Oxfams “fair‟ chocolate.
The special fair trade baking demonstration will help to mark the start of a fortnight in celebration of all things fair trade.
Buying and cooking with fair trade products helps to improve the lives of millions of farmers, producers, their families and their communities in developing countries.
The Oxfam “fair‟ brand of chocolate used in Simon’s muffins is sourced from the National Confederation of Dominican Cocoa producers.
Oxfam Shop’s Wholesale Business Manager David Evans said sales of this fair trade chocolate had provided many benefits to the communities involved.
“Farmers now have access to technical and financial assistance, and community and computer centres have been constructed, as well as a library and a school,” he said.
“The fair trade premiums have also helped to repair schools in five regions, and provided students from low-income families with scholarships and school materials.”
