Supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women to make positive changes through political engagement
National Summit 17 - 22 October 2021
Application open 26 April - 17 July 2021
What is Straight Talk?
Straight Talk connects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women with the political system and builds the capacity of women as change makers. With a focus on practical tools and confidence, Straight Talk develops Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women’s skills to make positive changes through political engagement, while also increasing their engagement in public and political life.
The program includes a biannual national summit in Canberra, where participants learn about Australia’s political system while forming powerful networks with each other and with women of Federal and State Parliament. On alternate years, a regional summit is held, creating an opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in remote areas to come together with others from their region.
This year, our national summit will be held during 17 — 22 October. Application open 26 April — 17 July 2021.
Since its inception in 2009, the Straight Talk program has brought together more than 850 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women from across the nation. Following their participation in Straight Talk many of these women have ascended into higher decision-making duties. In 10 years, Straight Talk has successfully delivered nine national summits and regional gatherings in Perth, Alice Springs, Cairns, Nhulunbuy, Broome, Melbourne and Townsville.
