How Fairtrade friendly is your local supermarket?

Fairtrade Australia is searching for Australia’s most Fairtrade friendly supermarket and they need your help to find it!

To get involved is simply visit your local supermarket anytime until 10 October 2010, find all the Fairtrade Certified products you can and then complete the online voting form by going to www.checkoutfairtrade.org.au and registering how many you found.

In addition to helping find Australia’s most Fairtrade friendly supermarkets, the entry with the best idea for making Aussie supermarkets more Fairtrade friendly will win a holiday package from Virgin Blue worth up to $2000!

Don’t forget to invite your friends and colleagues to get in on the action as well.

Which supermarket will win the 2010 Checkout Fairtrade Awards?

In 2009 Victorian independent supermarket Leo’s Fine Food & Wine in Kew and Coles Belmont in New South Wales proved their commitment to Fairtrade by taking top honours in our Checkout Fairtrade search to find Australia’s Most Fairtrade Friendly Supermarket.

Congratulations was also awarded to Lorna Bateman of Belmont who won a $2000 Fairtrade prize pack with her creative idea of making Aussie supermarkets more Fairtrade friendly by introducing a Fair Dinkum Fairtrade in-store promotion.

Remember, not all trade is fair! Farmers and workers at the beginning of the chain don’t always get a fair share of the benefits of trade. Fairtrade enables consumers to put this right. One of the reasons why getting involved is so important.

Fairtrade is an alternative approach to conventional trade and is based on a partnership between producers and consumers. Fairtrade offers producers a better deal and improved terms of trade. This allows them the opportunity to improve their lives and plan for their future. Fairtrade offers consumers a powerful way to reduce poverty through their every day shopping.

When a product carries the Fairtrade Label it means the producers and traders have met Fairtrade standards. The standards are designed to address the imbalance of power in trading relationships, unstable markets and the injustices of conventional trade.

So, get involved today by visiting your local independent or major supermarket today and tell them you want to see more Fairtrade!
