Areas of work
Oxfam works in four key areas to tackle inequality and poverty around the world.

Bangladesh: Sagori has been a tea worker since her husband's death seven years ago. With only her single income of just 170 Taka [AU$2.30] per day, she struggles to provide for her children. She particpates in the Empowering Women through Civil Society Actors (EWCSA) program with Oxfam local partner Breaking the Silence, supported by the European Union (EU). Photo: Fabeha Monir/Oxfam
Poverty doesn’t happen in a vacuum: it is the result of an unfair world.
Economic systems that are designed to benefit the 1%. Social norms and policies that harm women, girls and people of diverse genders and sexualities. Systemic discrimination against the First Peoples of Australia. A climate crisis caused by the rich, but felt by everyone else.
All these forms of inequality are why poverty exists. That’s why we work across different areas to address the causes, not the symptoms of poverty.
By tackling the systems, structures and social norms that fuel inequality and injustice we can remove the barriers that hold people back, and create a world where everyone can thrive. Because the future is equal.

AREAS OF WORK

All around the world, women, girls and people of diverse genders and sexualities are more likely than men to face discrimination and violence, and to live in poverty. They are also less likely to have the power to change their circumstances.
Gender inequality is caused by gender bias in our systems, structures and attitudes, which create an environment where women, girls and people of diverse genders and sexualities are denied their rights to learn, earn equal pay, hold leadership positions and live safely. Oxfam is working with communities, local leaders and governments to transform the balance of power between men and people of other genders, and build more equal societies.
