Niveen and her family were living ordinary lives in Gaza when the war began and they were forced to leave everything behind.

“We lived through many stages of fear. When we first fled our home, the shells were falling on us,” she says.

In the makeshift tent camp in Gaza city where she and her family now live, water and hygiene supplies are critically low. Some days, there isn’t even a bar of soap — an essential for staying healthy and preventing deadly disease.

This is the reality for families across the Middle East today. After enduring years of conflict, displacement, economic collapse and significant barriers to humanitarian aid delivery, families already struggling now face new dangers.

Will you make a tax-deductible donation today to help provide life-saving water and hygiene kits to families in crisis?

Voices from the crisis

I want to live like you. Like any woman, with privacy for myself and my daughter.”

Marwa, Palestine

In Palestine, people like Marwa are struggling to survive on the bare minimum of water and little to no sanitation. Marwa and her teenage daughter struggle to maintain privacy and hygiene in their crowded shelter. It’s a daily struggle to maintain hygiene, health and dignity without clean water.

We cannot often afford ... to fire the oven and boil enough water... This is why we have to ration the water...”

Khadija, Syria

Khadija lives in a modest house without sanitation. The 2023 earthquake partially destroyed her home, leaving the family vulnerable. Without water, Khadija struggles to keep things clean for herself and her daughter, who is still traumatised by the earthquake and can’t sleep through the night.

We would set out at dawn, carrying heavy loads of water back home. The water we collected was not clean.”

Rawya, Yemen

Rawya supports her family by working multiple jobs amid Yemen’s economic crisis. Before Oxfam intervened and installed a solar-powered water system, Rawya had to walk long distances to secure unsafe drinking water for her family.

We just want to live... We’re tired... We have nothing left, even our home. It’s maybe the fifth time we’ve had to rebuild it.

Gloria, Lebanon

Gloria, her husband and their two cats was displaced from her home in South Lebanon after their house was bombed. When she fled, she struggled to find water on her way to a shelter in the north.

Why give to Oxfam

Oxfam has been working across the Middle East for decades, delivering clean water in some of the world’s toughest conditions. We work with local partners, responding rapidly in emergencies and staying for the long term – long after conflicts and disasters cease.

FAQs

How is the war in Iran impacting the wider Middle East region?

The escalating conflict is having devastating consequences for civilians across the Middle East, compounding crises in countries already grappling with conflict, displacement, and economic collapse. While the fighting may be concentrated in certain areas, its humanitarian impacts are being felt far beyond borders.

Airstrikes and retaliatory attacks have hit civilian and energy infrastructure, disrupted supply routes, and driven up fuel and food prices across the region. At the same time, millions of people have been forced to flee their homes, placing enormous strain on already overstretched communities and services.
