Help communities be ready before the next storm

Will you donate to help communities access the knowledge, skills and tools they need to prepare for climate emergencies?

Husaini knows that the next big storm could take everything from her. It’s happened before.

Lombok is a tropical island in Indonesia known for its beautiful coastlines and crystalline waters. But as the climate emergency worsens, the storms and floods that strike every wet season are becoming more and more brutal.

In 2018, a violent storm caused flash flooding that destroyed Husaini’s home in East Lombok.

The trauma of this storm still hasn’t left Husaini. And as another wet season approaches, she fears her family could lose their home, their livelihood and even their lives.

“They said, ‘Water is coming for East Lombok…’ My heart was already so shocked, like I already felt the disaster.”

– Husaini, Lombok.

Storms have always happened in Lombok. But their increasing unpredictability and severity means communities have no time or resources to prepare. That’s where you come in.

You can help families like Husaini’s get ahead of a disaster by providing simple solutions like rain gauges to help predict floods, items for emergency bags for families who need to flee and training and education on what to do when a storm or flood happens.

Will you stand with our Indonesian neighbours as they prepare for the next storm?

How your donation can help

Climate emergencies push people further into poverty. But your donation can help them be ready, prepared, and resilient when the next storm hits. Your work will support Oxfam and our local partner KONSEPSI to deliver life-saving measures to prevent disaster. Your gift can provide:

When people are prepared, they can act

Since connecting with Oxfam and our local partner organisation KONSEPSI, Husaini’s community no longer feels helpless as they wait for the next emergency.

Thanks to supporters like you, Husaini’s village was able to access training with our partners in Indonesia, so they’ll be prepared for a summer of tropical storms.

This is what prevention looks like

A rain gauge is a simple but effective tool that can help communities anticipate rising floodwaters.

It’s enough to protect homes and livelihoods — and even save lives. Can you donate today?

Ready to face what’s ahead

For Husaini, it’s not just knowing the practical actions to take, it’s also the emotional relief that feeling prepared gives her. As well as training, Husaini received a cash transfer to buy emergency supplies. This financial aid enabled her to stock an emergency evacuation bag and purchase sandbags and non-perishable food.

Husaini says the training has made a huge difference.

We were told how to prepare against disaster,” she told us. “We were taught what we must do when disaster happens. I already have [the emergency bag] for around a year. I have it at hand. I practiced it… We were told to prepare what we needed.”
