In response to today’s announcement that the Australian Government has voted against referring the Red Lines legislation to a Senate inquiry, Oxfam Australia Executive Lead of Public Engagement, Rod Goodbun said:
“We are disappointed that the Government has chosen not to support further parliamentary scrutiny of this important legislation.
“Australia must ensure its weapons, money and trade do not contribute to genocide, war crimes or other serious violations of international law.
“Parliamentary scrutiny is an important part of making sure our laws reflect Australia’s international obligations. We urge the Government to support a proper examination of the Red Lines legislation, including hearing from experts and affected communities.
“Words of concern must be matched by meaningful safeguards. Australia has a responsibility to ensure its actions uphold human rights and help prevent further harm.”
