“What I tried to change was, I slowly changed myself. I helped with everything. I was the one taking water from the well. For wood, I gathered them too. For cooking, when my wife woke up late at times, I cooked.”

  • Yesi was a perpetrator of violence until he began learning about gender equality 
  • Yesi was connected with Oxfam partner Konsorsium Timor Adil dan Setara in Indonesia to promote gender equality by increasing women’s economic empowerment, promoting women’s political participation, decision making and leadership, and reducing violence against women and girls
  • Yesi is now an advocate for women’s rights and inclusion in his village, participates in more domestic work and helps his partner around the home

“I’m a project manager in Larantuka (Indonesia) working on a Climate and Disaster Resilient Communities project with Oxfam. We mostly focus on climate problems and drought.”

Siphon’s story

“My name is Siphon. From 2017, I worked as a volunteer in the community fishery management committee. I want to protect natural resources both in the water and on land… I gather for patrolling in this lake, and sometimes in the river.”

“I am a Bunuba-speaking Miluwindi-clan woman from Fitzroy crossing. I grew up there, left for school, and now I’m back living there. I wanted to come back and learn my language and my culture properly.”
