What is happening in Nepal?

On 26 August, a major flash flood struck Nepal's Rasuwa District severely affecting Syapru Besi and Timure near the Tibet border.

Right now, 1114 deaths have been recorded, 3,916 people are missing and thousands have been forced from their homes.

Entire villages have been washed away with significant damage to settlements, roads, bridges, market areas and critical infrastructure.

A secondary flood wave struck Nepal on 30 August, compounding the devastation. The fresh surge forced the complete closure of the vital Prithvi Highway after a major section at Krishnabhir collapsed due to severe landslide, cutting off the main road link to Kathmandu.

Oxfam is working closely with the Government and local partners to assess what people urgently need.

Scaling up our response

Oxfam, working with its partners and in close coordination with local authorities, is immediately supplying emergency hygiene kits, water purification solutions, food items and emergency shelter across hundreds of households in the hardest-hit districts of Dhading, Rasuwa and Nuwakot.

The Government of Nepal estimates that 10,000 households — nearly 50,000 people — require emergency hygiene support and water purification, in addition to 3,130 dignity kits and nearly 4,000 baby kits for children under five.

As the scale of the disaster unfolds, more families will urgently need emergency supplies including clean water, shelter, and sanitation.
