Treaty Pledge

Our vision

Oxfam Australia is a global justice organisation working to dismantle the systems that create and entrench poverty. We recognise that justice — social, economic, gender, and climate justice — cannot be realised without justice for First Peoples.

We live and work on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lands that were stolen, and where sovereignty was never ceded. We honour the strength, leadership, and resistance of First Peoples who continue to assert their rights to land, water, culture, and self-determination. We understand that as a settler institution, we hold a responsibility to act.

 That means listening to and following the leadership of First Peoples — from our Board, volunteers and staff to our partners and communities.

It also means ensuring our programs, policies, and workplace are culturally safe, resourced, and grounded in accountability. This is not the work of one program — it is a shared responsibility across all of Oxfam Australia.

Why Treaty matters to us

For First Peoples, the Treaty is a long-fought-for right — a mechanism for truth-telling, reparative justice, and self-determined futures. It is not simply a legal instrument; it is a healing process, led by First Peoples on their terms and timelines.

For Oxfam, the Treaty is a mirror — it reflects back our values and challenges us to live them. It calls us to move beyond symbolic allyship and into accountable solidarity. It asks us to examine how we share power, shift resources, and embed First Peoples’ voices, rights, and priorities across all we do.

Treaty matters because justice demands it — and because our commitment to First Nations justice must be visible, vocal, and active.

We commit to walking the long path alongside First Peoples — as we work to dismantle colonial systems and build a just, inclusive future grounded in truth, land, and sovereignty.

Oxfam Australia proudly stands in support of the Treaty. This pledge builds on our commitment to Radical Justice and our First Peoples Justice Strategy and reflects our aim to Advance First Nations’ equity — a pillar of our 2026–2030 organisational strategy.

  • Partner with integrity, grounded in trust, transparency, and shared decision-making.
  • Embed First Peoples’ leadership and perspectives across our programs, advocacy, and operations
  • Use our platforms to raise awareness, challenge injustice, and grow public support for the Treaty and truth-telling.
  •  Support resource shifts that enable community-defined pathways to justice.
  • Track and share our progress feedback openly, through community-led feedback and accountability practices embedded in our strategy.
