In Papua New Guinea (PNG), Oxfam Australia is responding to the looming HIV and AIDS epidemic as well as addressing the needs of local communities adversely affected by mining operations. This work is done in collaboration with four local partner organisations in Port Moresby and PNG's Central and East Sepik provinces.

Responding to emergencies
When disaster strikes around the world, Oxfam moves quickly to provide life-saving assistance to people in need.
In Papua New Guinea, thousands were left homeless following Cyclone Guba which caused severe flooding in Oro, Central and Milne Bay provinces last November. Oxfam helped more than 9,000 people, providing emergency shelter, restoring water and sanitation facilities and promoting safe health and hygiene practices. Our public health program is continuing to ensure people remain healthy and have access to clean water and sanitation facilities.
Effects of resource exploitation
PNG is rich in natural and mineral resources and mining and logging are major sources of revenue for the government. But some mining operations are adversely affecting the lives and environments of local communities. We are supporting the Centre for Environmental Research and Development which aims to reduce the detrimental impacts of mining on communities through community empowerment and advocacy. Oxfam Australia's Mining Ombudsman is also actively involved in the country, most recently regarding the Tolukuma gold mine.
HIV and AIDS
PNG is on the brink of an HIV and AIDS epidemic. The World Health Organization has predicted that one in every five PNG men, women and children will be infected with HIV within the next decade unless radical action is taken.
Our partner organisation HELP Resources is working to increase awareness of HIV/AIDS prevention and care in PNG's East Sepik province. The project has trained 400 female village health volunteers in sexual health and HIV/AIDS prevention, and is piloting a training program on sex education skills with a group of teachers, vocational trainers and education officials.
